In Eritrea, Christianity is one of the two main religions (the second one being Islam). For the Christian people of Eritrea, a cross is perhaps the most important symbol of their religious identity. Shown in the top right and left corners in this portrait are two crosses which people wear around their neck. The crosses come in so many different designs. Two other crosses are shown in the bottom left corners are usually held in the hand by priests and used to bless congregants with. The biggest cross, shown in the middle of the painting, is also used for similar purposes during a mass.
